Food insecurity can result due to a combination of factors including:

Eating a poor quality diet as a result of limited food options

Anxiety about acquiring food

Having to rely on food relief
Who is at risk of food insecurity in Australia?

Low income families and individuals, in particular people who are unemployed or have limited formal education

Individuals with a disability, including mental illnesses

People from non-English speaking backgrounds such as refugees and asylum seekers

Frail elderly individuals, specifically those who are socially isolated and have low incomes

Individuals affected by alcohol and/or substance abuse

Homeless people
